The siege of Leningrad from 1941 to 1944 was one of the epics of world history.  The people of the city endured everything that the German Army could throw at them for three long years, and by their success placed a fatal block on Hitler’s ambitions to rule Europe.

The investment was bigger than any previously, with more troops and civilians involved than in any other siege operation.  The story is a compelling narrative as the Germans try shelling, bombing, and starvation to reduce the defences and break the morale of the population.  This is the story of heroism and tragedy on a vast scale, as the Soviets frantically tried to keep the city supplied and the Germans did everything in their power to annihilate it.  And as the siege wore on the steadily increasing privations killed thousands of citizen; nearly 4000 Leningraders starved to death on Christmas Day 1941 alone.

Illustrated throughout with photographs sourced from previously unavailable Russian archives, together with full-colour maps.
